After the alarm that the ore in the Kiruna mine could run out as early as 2035, LKAB started a large project to look for more ore in the vicinity of all its existing mines.

The company has invested SEK 700 million, employed 25 people for exploration, test drilled 350 kilometers and operated 2.4 kilometers of exploration site.

Bright future scenario for LKAB

In February, LKAB will publish its results and will then be able to write up its mineral resources considerably.

Already now, the company can graphically show what it looks like at the three mining sites and they give a hint of a bright future scenario.

See the graphical curves in the video above.

Two mines will be one in Svappavaara

The investigations will continue in the coming years until 2025, when LKAB must decide on new main levels in Kiruna and Malmberget.

In the case of Svappavaara, the plan is to merge the Leveäniemi and Gruvberget mines into a single large underground mine.

In addition, LKAB continues the work of starting to extract apatite and rare earth metals in connection with the iron ore mines.

In the video above, Pierre Heeroma at LKAB tells more about the future of LKAB's mines.
