Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) has called on people not to give up the fight against Corona “in what is probably the most critical phase of the pandemic”.

"The fight against the virus is not a sprint, it is a marathon," said Laschet on Wednesday in the state parliament in Düsseldorf.

"We are more than halfway behind us - but we all know that the last kilometers are the toughest," he said with a view to the ongoing lockdown.

The next few weeks would have to be held out so that the events could be reevaluated.

"The corona pandemic is a catastrophe of the century, a stress test of historic proportions - we have to keep being aware of that," said Laschet, who is also the new CDU federal chairman.

For many families, Corona will forever remain a deep turning point.

In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, the sad mark of 10,000 deaths has already been exceeded.
