It was a group of hikers who had passed the victim shortly before the snow flow started that gave the alert.

A sixty-year-old from Lourdes died on Tuesday in an avalanche, reports

La Nouvelle République des Pyrénées

.

The man was ski touring in the area of the resort of Luz-Ardiden (Hautes-Pyrénées), currently closed to the public.

Despite the rapid arrival of help and the intervention of a helicopter from the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM), it took twenty minutes to find the skier under the snow piles.

His death was declared on the spot.

For several days, mountain rescuers have been calling on hikers to be cautious in the Pyrenees, in particular because the stations are closed and, therefore, the areas are not secure.

According to Météo Pyrénées, the avalanche risks are high on the massif until Friday.
