Gardelegen / Bernburg (dpa / sa) - The victims of National Socialism are commemorated today in Saxony-Anhalt with wreaths and various online formats.

The President of the State Parliament Gabriele Brakebusch and Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (both CDU) are expected in the afternoon at the Isenschnibbe Gardelegen Memorial.

Brakebusch demanded in advance to be vigilant today against all forms of violence and tyranny.

«Today we live in Germany in a reliable, self-confident democracy.

But it is by no means given to us forever.

We are all challenged every day to fill it with new life and to defend it. "

On the nationwide Holocaust Remembrance Day, everyone is invited to light a candle at home to commemorate the people murdered under National Socialism and to post it under the hashtag #LichterGegenDunkelheit.

In the evening, the Bernburg Theater offers a live stream of the monooper “The Diary of Anne Frank” based on Grigori Frid.

The Central German Chamber Philharmonic is playing.

There are also small initiatives such as that of the Jessen High School, which has developed a staged reading that will be published on Wednesday as a film on the channels of the Lichtenburg Prettin Memorial.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, the victims of National Socialism are remembered around the world.

On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers liberated the survivors of the Auschwitz extermination camp.

The camp symbolizes the Nazi genocide of millions of people.

Since 1996, at the suggestion of the then Federal President Roman Herzog, the victims have been commemorated on this day in Germany.
