Gardelegen / Bernburg (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) has emphasized the importance of commemorating the victims of National Socialism.

"We also deal with the terrible sides of our history, because they shape our own coexistence to this day and the overcoming of their consequences for the relationship with our neighbors is decisive," he said on Wednesday.

"The memory of the National Socialist rule and the memory of its victims are our moral duty."

This is even gaining in weight because there are fewer and fewer contemporary witnesses, Haseloff noted.

«We owe it to you and your families in a special way to remind and admonish future generations.

Our history must not be forgotten. "

With wreath-laying ceremonies and various online formats, the victims of National Socialism should also be commemorated in Saxony-Anhalt on Wednesday.

For the nationwide Holocaust Remembrance Day, everyone was invited to light a candle at home to commemorate the people murdered under National Socialism and to post it under the hashtag #LichterGegenDunkelheit.

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, the victims of National Socialism are remembered around the world.

On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers liberated the survivors of the Auschwitz extermination camp.

The camp symbolizes the Nazi genocide of millions of people.

Since 1996, at the suggestion of the then Federal President Roman Herzog, the victims have been commemorated on this day in Germany.
