Garching (dpa) - After the incident with radioactive C-14 at the research reactor FRM II in Garching was upgraded as a disruption, the Landtag Greens are demanding clarification.

It must be clarified which new findings led to the higher classification and who initiated this, said the chairman of the environmental committee Rosi Steinberger (Greens), who submitted a written request to the state government.

In January - eight months after the leakage of the radioactive C-14 - the operator had upgraded the incident on the scale for safety-relevant incidents and classified it on the international rating scale (INES) as level 1 and thus as a malfunction.

"It turned out that this incident was the only INES1 incident and thus the most serious incident in a German research reactor in the past 20 years," said Steinberger.

"We urgently need to investigate this incident more closely."

According to the Technical Director of FRM II, Axel Pichlmaier, the new classification was made “after intensive discussion with internal and external bodies”.

It needs to be explained why it was necessary to classify "external bodies", what it was and what role they played, Steinberger said.

She also asked: "Why has the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment not published this change in classification so far?"

This is responsible as the supervisory authority.

An operator error in a drying device was responsible for the emission of radioactive C-14 at the FRM II in spring.

The annual limit value set for the FRM II was exceeded by around 15 percent at the time.

According to the operator and authorities, there was no danger to people.
