Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Currently, visitors cannot visit the Frankfurt Zoo due to the Corona lockdown.

A voluntary “nature conservation euro” will be introduced for future visits from March onwards.

With this donation when buying the tickets, zoo visitors can make a contribution to nature and species protection, Ina Hartwig (SPD) announced on Wednesday.

The Frankfurt Zoo is following the example of other zoos, for example in Leipzig, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Rostock.

Six selected projects in Germany and abroad are supported with the Frankfurt Nature Conservation Euro.

The aim is to preserve habitats and biodiversity, said zoo director Miguel Casares.

The money is used, for example, to train rangers and equip them for their work, finance awareness-raising and educational measures on site, carry out ecological monitoring and operate rescue stations and reintroduction centers.

The partners include the Frankfurt Zoological Society with projects in the Manu National Park in Peru, the Serengeti in Tanzania and in the lowland rainforest on Sumatra, but also with the protection of natural forests in the Hessian Wispertaunus.
