Pep Guardiola, Manchester City coach, said that Joao Cancelo's controversial goal during his big club's 5-0 win over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Tuesday showed the importance of continuing to play until the referee's whistle.

Portuguese full-back Cancelo scored a goal in the 20th minute after a number of West Brom players stopped due to the referee's offside signal while building the attack, while the referee had not yet blown the whistle.

But the goal was counted for City after the VAR.

"I understand the complaints of the West Brom players and their coach," Guardiola told reporters. "But with this law, you have to continue playing until the end. Don't stop because the video referee can cancel the goal."

"This is an important lesson for us. Today it happened to West Bromwich, but it could happen to us," the Spanish coach added.
