Forst (dpa / bb) - The Spree-Neisse district has appealed to walkers to keep fence gates closed to contain the African swine fever.

The currently comparatively stable situation could be endangered by careless behavior, the district announced on Wednesday.

A lot of time, effort, human resources and money have been invested to protect the economy from the effects of African swine fever, said District Administrator Harald Altekrüger.

A door that is only open for a short time could lead to the animals bringing the infection back to new areas.

According to the information in the district, the number of wild infections with the pathogen is currently stagnating in 35 cases confirmed by laboratory diagnostics in the so-called core area.

A total of 527 cases (as of January 20) have so far been officially confirmed in the country.

The disease is harmless to humans and is almost always fatal for wild and domestic pigs.

There is no preventive vaccination for the pigs.
