Berlin (dpa) - The theater director Andrea Breth (68) is awarded the Joana Maria Gorvin Prize.

The award, endowed with 10,000 euros, recognizes the outstanding performance of a theater artist in German-speaking countries every five years.

The public award is planned for the beginning of September in Berlin, as the Academy of the Arts announced on Wednesday.

The jury praised Breth as a “theater woman who convincingly succeeds in bringing theater to life”.

Breth has already received numerous awards, including the Federal Cross of Merit and the Austrian Nestroy Theater Prize for her life's work.

She grew up in Darmstadt and initially had great success with the staging of plays in Bochum and Berlin.

She often directed the Salzburg Festival and the Burgtheater in Vienna.

The award is named after the actress Joana Maria Gorvin (1922-1992) and previously went to Pina Bausch, Anny Schlemm, Anja Silja, Jutta Lampe and Kirsten Dene.

According to the academy, the composition of the jury was determined by Gorvin's husband, founder Maximilian B. Bauer: it consists of five male members from the performing arts section.

The 2020 jury included Jürgen Flimm, Christian Grashof, Volker Ludwig, Klaus Völker and Jossi Wieler.
