Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Make high-horsepower cars break out: The police in Hesse have pointed out the dangers of such driving maneuvers after incidents with so-called drifters.

"It is a dangerous undertaking and we are lucky that so far in relation to the cases that have been identified, not more has happened," said Thomas Mosbacher, police expert for traffic prevention, the German press agency.

"Whoever thinks they have to do that should also bear in mind that they not only endanger themselves, but also uninvolved third parties."

There are no precise figures on road traffic incidents, as the term drifting is not specifically listed in the statistics, as Mosbacher, who works at the Hessian State Criminal Police Office, explains.

But one thing is certain: "There are incidents and the numbers are increasing, which we find during controls."

Drifting is - based on a term from motorsport - the hurling of the car with the rear breaking out.

In the past few weeks the Hessian police had registered several cases: At the beginning of January, for example, the snow-covered runway of the glider airfield in Gedern (Wetteraukreis) was used for drifting and the area was devastated by deep ruts.

A few days earlier, the police in northern Hesse broke up a meeting of car drifters with 40 cars on the plateau on the Hoher Meißner.
