The government will do "everything" so that the regional and departmental elections are held in June, insisted Tuesday the Minister responsible for Citizenship Marlène Schiappa, during the examination at first reading in the Senate of the bill organizing their postponement.

“To propose such a postponement,” from March to June, “is never an easy decision.

It is directly linked to the epidemic context.

We will do everything to ensure that these elections are held next June, ”assured the minister, faced with fears expressed in the opposition to see them rejected by the executive after the presidential election of 2022 for political considerations.

Limit the health risk

"The precise choice of dates is up to regulatory power and will be done as quickly as possible," she said.

"On the other hand, only the law could decide on a new postponement (...) which the government does not want", she insisted.

The Minister detailed the measures that will be taken to limit the health risk, citing in particular the wearing of a compulsory mask, the provision of hydralcoholic gel, the State taking charge of the necessary materials, the organization of distancing, etc. The number of voters present simultaneously in the polling station will be limited to three people.

"Facilitate the exercise of the right to vote"

"Beyond these sanitary arrangements, the government is preparing regulatory measures to facilitate the exercise of the right to vote", added the minister, indicating in particular that a decree "is under discussion with the Council of State »To adjust the organization of the double ballot.

The government is considering pooling the functions of president and secretary of the polling station, as well as the voting booths.

He will also propose that, if an assessor is missing, it is the youngest voter who is appointed by default, and not the oldest as is normally the case.
