Hamburg (dpa / lno) - For the first time in three weeks, Hamburg's primary schools are recording a decline in occupancy.

This week, only 22.5 percent of the students were registered by their parents for face-to-face classes, the school authorities announced on Tuesday.

That is around ten percent less than last week, when more than 40 percent of the children in eleven schools were registered for face-to-face classes.

This week this is only the case for four schools.

Overall, only 41 of the 204 primary schools in Hamburg had very high attendance rates of 30 percent and more.

“Step by step”, the right balance between face-to-face and distance teaching is found in dialogue with parents, said school senator Ties Rabe.

With the extension and tightening of the lockdown, the Senate had again appealed to parents to only give their children to schools if this was unavoidable.

"I know that the corona pandemic puts a lot on the parents of elementary school children," said Rabe.

“But especially because of the incalculable dangers of the virus mutation from England, it is important that as many children as possible study at home and not go to school.”

However, he thinks little of proposals to only take in children of parents from so-called systemically relevant professions.

"It's also about taking the needs of many families, especially single parents, seriously."

That is why one in Hamburg will continue to rely on "that those involved find good solutions for each individual child on site."
