Berlin / Kiel (dpa / lno) - In Schleswig-Holstein, 35 new wind turbines were built last year.

122 megawatts of additional capacity meant fifth place among the federal states, as shown by the figures presented by Deutsche WindGuard on Tuesday in Berlin on behalf of the Federal Wind Energy Association and the VDMA Power Systems Association.

Schleswig-Holstein's share of the nationwide gross expansion of 1431 megawatts was nine percent.

According to figures from the Wind Agency, only 12 plants with a total output of 39.4 megawatts were added in Schleswig-Holstein in 2019.

According to the figures presented on Tuesday, the 2020 expansion in North Rhine-Westphalia was the largest with 317 megawatts and 93 wind turbines.

420 new wind turbines were added nationwide.

Their total output of 1,431 megawatts corresponds to an increase of 46 percent compared to the record low of the previous year.

In 2019 the expansion was at its lowest level since the introduction of the Renewable Energy Sources Act in 2000. Industry associations see the lack of space, long approval procedures and many lawsuits as reasons for the stagnant wind power expansion.

At the end of 2020, an amendment was passed to accelerate the expansion of renewable energies.

In 2020, 15 old wind turbines in Schleswig-Holstein were replaced by newer ones through so-called repowering.

Their total output was 50 megawatts.

However, 30 old wind turbines (52 megawatts) were also dismantled.

The new systems had an average total height of 159 meters and an output of 3.486 megawatts.

The north took first place with a volume of 583 megawatts for new wind turbines before Lower Saxony (503 megawatts).

Nationwide, the cumulative number of wind turbines rose to 29,608 as of December 31, 2020.

In Schleswig-Holstein there were 3673 wind turbines with a total output of 7064 megawatts.
