Munich / Berlin (dpa) - CSU boss Markus Söder is very skeptical about a move by Chancellor Helge Braun (CDU) to suspend the debt brake anchored in the Basic Law in the coming years.

"That would be the wrong signal," said the Bavarian Prime Minister on Tuesday.

"We cannot solve the economic consequences of the corona pandemic in the long run with higher debts or high taxes."

Söder therefore emphasized: "We are very skeptical about a permanent suspension of the debt brake."

What is needed is a coherent economic policy concept.

"Germany stands for financial integrity, and we should stick to it," warned the CSU boss.

The debt brake stipulates that the budgets of the federal and state governments are basically to be balanced without income from loans.

According to Braun, the rule cannot be adhered to in the coming years either.

It makes sense to combine a recovery strategy for the economy in Germany with an amendment to the Basic Law that provides for a "reliable degressive corridor" for new borrowing in the coming years and a clear date for the return to compliance with the debt rule, wrote the CDU Politicians in a guest article for the "Handelsblatt" (Tuesday).
