Koblenz / Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Police officers searched seven apartments of alleged IS terrorist financiers in Rhineland-Palatinate early on Tuesday morning.

During the raid in Ludwigshafen, Kaiserslautern, Trier and in Germersheim in the Palatinate, they secured numerous pieces of evidence such as cell phones and small amounts of hashish.

This was announced by the Koblenz Public Prosecutor's Office and the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) Rhineland-Palatinate in Mainz.

Seven men and one woman between the ages of 22 and 58 are suspected of having transferred money to financial agents of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia in 2016 and 2017 to help finance their armed struggle in Syria and Iraq.

"This is a worldwide phenomenon," said the Koblenz attorney general Jürgen Brauer.

The alleged individual payments were low - but a lot comes together in the global total.

Nobody was arrested for the time being.

The raid was preceded by investigations lasting several months.

The State Central Office for Combating Terrorism and Extremism in Rhineland-Palatinate at the Koblenz Public Prosecutor's Office played an important role.
