Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian state government is planning an inner city offensive to help the city centers shaken by the Corona crisis.

Local minister Ina Scharrenbach (CDU) said on Tuesday at a digital city center summit that the goal was to pool all forces to develop future prospects for the city centers.

The initiative was supported by local authorities as well as trade associations and companies.

The CDU politician spoke out in favor of allowing more creativity in the inner cities, even if deviations from building planning or building regulations would have to be made.

"It must be easier to turn living into commercial or commercial into living."

In the current situation, an “inner city innovation space” is necessary.

NRW Finance Minister Lutz Lienenkämper (CDU) signaled his willingness to use the state's start-up funding from the Corona rescue package.

The state initiative received support at the city center summit from the North Rhine-Westphalia Trade Association, the North Rhine-Westphalia City Council and the North Rhine-Westphalia City and Municipal Association.

According to the plans of local minister Scharrenbach, those involved should develop concrete ideas for the inner city offensive and come to an agreement on “what we should do” within the next four weeks.
