Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate have significance far beyond the state, according to the words of the Greens federal chairman Robert Habeck.

At a digital election campaign event of the party, Habeck said on Tuesday that “this state election is not just the start of a super election year, but also a decade of decision”.

The election on March 14th will help determine how the whole country will conduct the political discussion on climate protection in the future.

With a view to the corona situation, the Rhineland-Palatinate top candidate Anne Spiegel called on "not to buy from the big mail order companies", but to support local retailers.

The necessary measures to contain the pandemic would have to be implemented with a focus on the common good - "we don't look first at the aviation industry or the automotive industry".

Instead, more attention must be paid to the needs of families with children.

A peak of 470 people took part in the “digital town hall” during the election campaign on the online platforms YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

The first question came from the Rhineland-Palatinate Climate List, which Habeck described as a partner, not a political opponent.

But they are also competitors for votes and “in the end it could be a few hundred votes that decide which government is formed”.
