Hamburg (dpa) - The Hamburg sailor Boris Herrmann received prominent encouragement on the last nautical miles of the Vendée Globe circumnavigation.

"You always said that getting into the top 5 would feel like a win - and now this ... What a great success, no matter how it ends now," wrote Greta Thunberg in a message to Herrmann, die the "Hamburger Abendblatt" is available.

"It makes me really happy to see that sailing fans all over the world and all of Germany now know what a great person you are."

The 18-year-old Swedish climate activist revealed that she followed the race “several times a day” and that it was great to keep in touch with Herrmann.

The man from Hamburg sailed Thunberg across the Atlantic to New York on a yacht in late summer 2019.

Thunberg had decided not to use an airplane for reasons of climate protection.
