Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The corona development in the Rhineland-Palatinate old people's and nursing homes is "still highly dangerous" according to the general practitioner association.

The association chairwoman Barbara Römer told the German press agency.

"We are in the truest sense of the word in a race: are we faster with the two vaccinations, or is the coronavirus ahead of us in a home?"

In this area, “we are currently walking a very fine line”.

Therefore, from their point of view, the decision was "absolutely correct and urgently necessary" to assign the over-80s in the old people's and nursing homes to the highest priority group and to let the vaccine resources flow there, said Römer, who has a practice in the Rhineland-Hesse region Saulheim operates.

"We have to hurry with the first and second vaccinations in the homes."

It is also very important to achieve a high vaccination rate for the staff of these facilities in order to build up a protective wall for the home residents.

In the home that she and her practice team help look after the vaccinations, residents and employees are very willing to vaccinate.

«The essentials here are good and comprehensive information.

We have repeatedly used our home visits to answer a large number of questions about vaccinations from residents and employees in advance, ”she said.

Education works best through personal approach.

Regarding the pandemic situation outside the homes, she said: "As a corona practice, we continue to see the infection process up close."

Since the start of the pandemic, around nine out of ten infection patients in Rhineland-Palatinate have been cared for in mainly GP-run corona practices or infection consultations.

“In a period from around the beginning of December to the turn of the year, these structures ran at maximum capacity.

During this period, we treated more infection patients than ever since the beginning of the pandemic, ”reported the state chairwoman.

At the same time, the proportion of positive tests was higher than ever before.

"For us this meant: working to the limit and beyond."

The situation has now eased somewhat.

Appointments for the infection consultation have decreased significantly since mid-January.

The rate of positive test results also decreases considerably.

This is of course a regional assessment.

“However, I can say for ourselves here: something is happening in a positive way.

The lockdown is having an effect, ”emphasized the doctor.
