Leipzig (dpa / sn) - It's a popular joke on social networks to ask whether the followers want to feel old - and then to point out how many years an iconic rock or pop song has now under its belt.

This also works with the early hits of the Leipzig pop band Die Prinzen: catchy tunes such as “Mann im Mond”, “Gaby und Klaus” or “Millionär” were released in 1991, 30 years ago.

The princes are taking the amazingly round date as an opportunity to report back.

On January 29th, the new single «You may be allowed to do anything» will be released, followed by the accompanying album «Krone der Schichtung» in May.

The motto of the return is: «30 years of princes.

A comeback - they were never gone »back.

Does it feel more like a return or more like an anniversary for the musicians?

"More like an anniversary," says singer Sebastian Krumbiegel (54).

«We were never gone.

We can hardly believe that we've been making music together for 30 years. "

His band colleague Tobias Künzel (56) adds: “We have been on tour with the symphony orchestra, we have been on sold-out church tours.

If you wanted to, you've heard from the princes. "

Only in the media they have been shortened.

Die Prinzen also took their time with the album, the last so far was released in 2015. "We started planning and writing songs two years ago," says Krumbiegel.

The princes had experimented a lot, opened up to the outside world, and wrote songs with other musicians.

In the end, almost all of the songs that made it on the album were not written until 2020.

“That shows that we are active as a band and not our own oldie band,” says Krumbiegel.

And what will the princes sound like in 2021?

«I think that all twelve new songs are classic prince songs.

If we suddenly turned to AC / DC, nobody would do that for us, ”says Krumbiegel.

On the first single “May one is allowed to do everything” the musicians deliver what the singers in the Thomaner- und Kreuzchor once learned: perfect choral singing, with a pop that is typical for Prince.

“I think we've captured what the princes are pretty good.

The cooperation has helped us to avoid tunnel vision, ”says Krumbiegel.

While working on the album, the seven musicians, like all artists, struggled with the effects of the Corona.

“We all met“ two-dimensionally ”once a week, that is, in a video link.

And then we always went to the studio in groups to make the recordings, ”says Künzel.

Krumbiegel says he especially misses making music with others.

“When people talk about Corona and art, a lot is always about financial matters.

That is also an important point.

But what I miss most is making music. "

“It is a terrible time for us as artists.

Of course you can stream living room concerts.

But you can't live on that, ”says Künzel.

For various reasons, the princes are already clear that they are in a privileged economic position.

Nevertheless, the pandemic also slows them down.

Krumbiegel: “It's difficult that we are not allowed to go out, not allowed on the stage.

We'd be ready, we could go on tour.

But we actually expect that we won't be allowed to go back on stage before 2022. "
