Hanau (dpa / lhe) - A memorial event is planned in Hanau on February 19 to mark the anniversary of the racially motivated attack that left nine dead.

In addition to Hanau's Lord Mayor Claus Kaminsky (SPD), Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) will also take part, government spokesman Michael Bußer said of the German Press Agency on request.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) was also asked.

Details on this and the course of the event were initially not known.

On February 19, last year, the 43-year-old German Tobias R. shot nine people with foreign roots in Hanau, before presumably killing his mother and ultimately himself.

The act caused horror nationwide.

The man had previously posted pamphlets and videos of conspiracy theories and racist views on the Internet.

The city of Hanau recently referred to a planned press conference on the commemorative event.

Meanwhile, the "February 19 Hanau Initiative" has renewed its demands for political consequences from the act on the upcoming anniversary.

"Racism, in whatever form, must no longer be tolerated, played down or ignored," says the initiative's homepage.

Since you cannot get together with everyone because of the corona pandemic, the way it is needed and would be desirable, the initiative called for rallies, demonstrations and memorial events in other cities on February 19.
