Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin has hardly made use of federal funds from the School Digital Pact.

In May 2019, the federal and state governments decided to better equip schools in Germany with, for example, fast internet, digital boards, WiFi or laptops and tablets by 2024.

To this end, five billion euros should be invested by the federal government and 500 million euros by the federal states.

As "Zeit online" reported on Tuesday, of the 256.9 million federal funds available to Berlin, only 27 million have been approved so that the money can be spent.

That is just under eleven percent.

In other federal states the proportion is significantly higher, nationwide it is twelve percent.

Hamburg, for example, has already approved 127.9 million euros - 100 percent, Saxony 246.1 of 249.5 million, that's almost 99 percent.

Well behind Berlin are Schleswig-Holstein and Saarland, each with a share of around 3 percent.

The goal of approving half of the financial aid by the end of 2021 is still a long way off, according to "Zeit online".

Especially during the corona pandemic, digital learning has gained significantly in importance as an alternative or supplement to teaching in school.

Sufficient equipment, for example with laptops and tablets, learning platforms and the ability to communicate via video conference, has also become even more important.
