In all corners of the Palestinian countryside to the south of the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank, nothing portends the usual calm in the agricultural areas, as the settlement noise disturbs the peace of Palestinians living in that area, in order to tighten its grip on what remains of Palestinian land and property.

The occupation plans to seize hundreds of dunams south of Nablus, in the northern West Bank, and for that, it issued decisions to confiscate more lands from the villages of Burin, Madama, and Asirah al-Qibli, in order to expand the settlement of Yitzhar, which besieges these villages.

The official in charge of the settlement file in the northern West Bank, Ghassan Douglas, says, “The occupation aims to seize more lands in the regions of Al-Marj, Jabal Al-Nathr in Burin, Bab Al-Marj, Khallat Al-Marj, Al-Aqdah in Madama, Lahf Salman, and Al-Aqdah in Asira Al-Qibliya, in order to annex it to a settlement. (Yitzhar), and adding new settlement units there, as well as building a road serving settlers.

He added, "The occupation considers the settlement of Yitzhar a town, so it plans to seize the lands of rural villages south of Nablus, and this causes the classification of lands to change from agricultural to residential, in favor of expanding the settlement’s structural plan, which narrows the siege on the Palestinian population."

Isolation and targeting

On the other hand, Raed Mawqdi, a researcher at the Palestinian Land Research Center, told Emirates Today that the villages south of Nablus are among the areas most targeted by settlement and occupation, as they are located between the jaws of the settlements of Yitzhar and Bracha, the largest settlements in the city of Nablus, and are surrounded by a number of From the outposts.

He added, "The settlement bypass road, known as Line (70), isolates these villages from each other, and in the north of the village of Burin, a training camp for the occupation army is being built, consuming vast areas of Palestinian land, in addition to threatening the lives of the residents."

Residents of the countryside south of Nablus are living in a state of continuous conflict due to the expansion of Yitzhar settlement at the expense of their lands, as this affects the outline plans of Palestinian villages and prohibits the continuation of building plans in them, according to my office.

Mawqdi clarifies that the current occupation plan targeting Palestinian lands to expand the settlement of Yitzhar extends from the southern countryside of Nablus, heading towards the village of Far'ata in Qalaa city, noting that Yitzhar is one of the settlements that the occupation has declared not to remove, despite any settlement process with the Palestinians.

Loss and deprivation

The researcher at the Land Research Center notes that the Yitzhar expansion project aims to seize dozens of agricultural dunums, to develop settlement activities, and establish housing units and government gatherings to serve settlers.

He says: “This project causes a great loss to Palestinian farmers in the southern countryside of Nablus, as they deprive their lands and crops. Thus, agricultural activity, which is their only source of income, stops, in addition to its contribution to completely changing the demographic character south of Nablus, in favor of future settlement activities.” .

He added, "The occupation is currently practicing severe restrictions against villages south of Nablus, as it prevents farmers from entering their agricultural lands, in addition to limiting construction activities and handing over decisions to demolish existing homes."

It is noteworthy that the villages of the southern countryside of Nablus witness, on a regular basis, violations carried out by settler groups, which infiltrate them from the settlement of Yitzhar. As a result, confrontations break out, after which the occupation forces intervene in the interest of the settlers against the Palestinians, and start firing live bullets, rubber bullets and tear gas canisters.

The occupation established Yitzhar settlement in 1983, on the center of Jabal Salman al-Farsi, which is located on the lands of villages south of Nablus, where Yitzhar is the main cause of the suffering of these villages around the clock, which suffers from a severe deterioration in basic services, as it needs to modernize the electricity distribution network, And building a new network for distributing water, in addition to the exacerbation of the water crisis throughout the year, which reaches the homes of citizens at a rate of once every six days.
