Essen (dpa / lnw) - Snowfall and slippery roads in many parts of North Rhine-Westphalia on Sunday led to accidents, traffic chaos and fallen trees.

In most cases, however, nobody was injured, as a survey of the police headquarters in the country showed.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the city of Essen formed the top of the snow in NRW on Sunday morning with a snow cover of up to 17 centimeters.

Due to slippery roads, vehicles came off the lane several times and slid against crash barriers, parked cars or street signs.

In Olsberg in the Sauerland, a 31-year-old driver was slightly injured after losing control of her car in a right-hand bend.

In Altena and Iserlohn in the Märkisches Kreis, clearing vehicles slid into a ditch.

The drivers aged 73 and 21 were slightly injured.

In the Rhein district of Neuss, a 20-year-old woman got off the slippery road and was slightly injured when her car tipped over on the roof.

According to the DWD, the thick snow cover in Essen had formed within eight hours.

There, the police recorded around 23 missions due to the weather by Sunday morning.

The fire brigade was also increasingly in use in Wuppertal and Solingen.

Trucks standing sideways caused interference on motorways such as the A61 at the Kerpen motorway junction near Cologne.

Officials there temporarily blocked the connection to the A4 in the direction of Cologne.

In Cologne, around 400 winter service workers with 175 vehicles took care of clearing snow and ice from main roads.

At the corona test station of a Solingen lung specialist clinic, tents collapsed due to the snow load.

The test center was back in regular operation, announced the fire department at noon.

In Heinsberg, too, a circus tent, which had found temporary accommodation in a local parking lot, collapsed under the amounts of snow.

Supporters therefore tried to get donations on Sunday on Facebook.

Flight operations at Cologne / Bonn Airport had to be interrupted again and again until the early morning hours.

"The winter service was in constant use," said a spokesman.

But there were no failures.

Turnout malfunctions and objects on the track temporarily caused delays and partial failures of regional trains and S-Bahns at Deutsche Bahn.

After the Lower Rhine was particularly affected by snowfall during the night and early Sunday morning, it later shifted towards the Sauerland.

According to the weather service, the snowpack in Lüdenscheid grew from eight to 17 centimeters within four hours.

On Saturday, municipalities such as Winterberg in the Sauerland announced that they would block their slopes.

"In the places where tobogganing is allowed, we have no violations at all," said a police spokesman for the Hochsauerlandkreis on Sunday.

Overall, fewer snow tourists came on the weekend.

In the last week of January it can go on in winter, especially in the nights: In the night on Monday, the weather service warned of slipperiness and freezing moisture.

Snow will then fall again in the southwest of the country.

In many places, Monday is under the "sign of the shower," said a DWD meteorologist.

The temperatures were between two and four degrees during the day before it could snow again on Tuesday night - in the mountainous region, rain or sleet is possible in the highlands.
