Tutzing (dpa) - The chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, has reiterated his call for mandatory visits by secondary school students to concentration camp memorials.

Such visits are also very useful for trainees in the police and the judiciary, said Schuster on Monday evening at the digital annual reception of the Evangelical Academy Tutzing on Lake Starnberg.

"In my opinion, the importance of the memorials grows as the contemporary witnesses disappear."

With a view to the current commemorative year “1700 years of Jewish life in Germany”, Schuster said that the Christian-Jewish relationship is better today than it has ever been in history.

However, he missed the historical reappraisal that was carried out at the top of the two Christian churches in the broader society.

"I sometimes both have doubts how much will arrive at the grassroots level in the individual parishes, and I see major deficits in society as a whole," said Schuster at the event shown on the Internet that evening.

The Evangelical Academy Tutzing is an institution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria.
