Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The CDU Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to start the election campaign in February and use the services of a well-known Austrian agency.

As CDU General Secretary Wolfgang Waldmüller said in Schwerin on Monday, the campaigning bureau of PR strategist Philipp Maderthaner, based in Vienna and now also in Berlin, has already organized successful election campaigns.

The agency worked for the Austrian Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU).

The Northeast CDU did not provide any information on the cost of the contract.

The aim is to first make the state chairman and designated CDU top candidate for the state elections in September, Michael Sack, better known, explained Waldmüller.

When he was elected party leader last summer, Sack had declared war on the incumbent Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD), but then avoided the public dispute.

The corona pandemic presents all parties with new challenges when planning their election campaigns, said Waldmüller.

In view of ongoing contact restrictions, social media and online portals would play a significantly greater role than in previous elections.

The state party congress to draw up the lists of candidates should not take place online, but as a face-to-face event - also because of the large number of votes to be expected.

Waldmüller named March 6th as a possible date.

Originally, the list election was supposed to be on January 30th.

However, it was postponed due to the persistently high number of infections in the country.

At the beginning of the election year, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania CDU wants to fill the management of the office.

She is looking for a successor for long-time managing director Klaus-Dieter Götz.
