Bornholm (dpa) - The special ship "Fortuna" involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has started preparations and tests south of the Danish island of Bornholm.

This work has started before laying work can start, as Nord Stream 2 announced on Monday.

"All work will be carried out in accordance with applicable permits," it said.

The media had previously reported on the resumption of work.

The "Fortuna" left the port of Wismar in mid-January, lay days in front of the port of Rostock before setting off for Bornholm at the end of last week.

The ship was classified as “blocked property” last week as part of punitive measures against a Russian company by the now detached US administration, Trump.

It was the first time that the US government punished a company under the sanctions laws against Nord Stream 2 for participating in the construction of the German-Russian gas pipeline.

According to the Russian energy company Gazprom, the main investor in Nord Stream 2, 94 percent of the pipeline has been completed.

It consists of two strings of pipeline, each around 1,230 kilometers long, and is expected to transport an additional 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia to Germany every year.
