A 27-year-old man died in a fire in a refugee shelter in Hamburg.

As a police spokesman said on Monday morning, the dead was a resident from Afghanistan.

The fire brigade was alerted on Sunday evening about the fire in a two-story wooden house in the accommodation in Billstedt.

When the rescue workers arrived, several residents had already escaped outside.

The wooden house burned according to the information in full.

It was a large-scale operation for the fire brigade - they were on site with 60 emergency services.

According to the police, there was still no knowledge of the cause of the fire on Monday.
