Kiel (dpa / lno) - goalkeeper Dinah Eckerle (Metz HB) and defense specialist Hendrik Pekeler (THW Kiel) are the "Handball Player of the Year" 2020. In the readers' poll of the specialist magazine "Handballwoche", the two German national players competed with a large lead the competition through.

Pekeler, who had refrained from participating in the World Cup in Egypt due to the corona, clearly won ahead of his Kiel team-mate Niklas Landin and national goalkeeper Johannes Bitter.

After the 29-year-old was voted the best defender at the European Championship in Norway, Sweden and Austria a year ago, he then won the German championship and the Champions League with the THW.

«I am really happy about the award in this very special year.

Personal awards often reflect the performance in the respective teams, ”said Pekeler to the trade magazine.

Eckerle won the election much closer to her national team colleagues Julia Maidhof and Emily Bölk.
