Brandenburg / Havel (dpa / bb) - A 64-year-old inmate was found lifeless in his cell in the Brandenburg / Havel penal institution.

Despite intensive resuscitation measures, the emergency doctor was only able to determine the death of the man on Monday morning, said the Justice Ministry.

According to the ministry, the 64-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 2004 and is currently housed in the social therapy department of the prison.

The ministry reported that there were no indications of an increased risk of suicide.

A review of the circumstances of the suicide had been initiated and the suicide officer for the penal system had been turned on.

There were four suicides in Brandenburg prisons last year and two cases in 2019.
