Berlin (dpa) - The testing of problems with the central input screen in Tesla cars continues, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

This concerns possible safety risks of the touch-sensitive screen in the center console of different model series.

The KBA is in contact with the US traffic authority NHTSA on the subject and has in turn initiated the examination, the authority announced on Monday.

"The result of the test is still pending."

"Bild am Sonntag" had previously reported on it.

The NHTSA had asked Tesla in mid-January to initiate a recall because of the security risks, "or otherwise to explain why such a recall is not necessary in the opinion of the manufacturer," the KBA said.

According to the information, Tesla was initially asked by the NHTSA to submit a statement with a deadline.

Around 158,000 older Tesla S and X models from 2012 to 2018 are affected.

Specifically, it is about storage space problems with certain computer chips, which can lead to failure of the central touchscreen screen, which is used to operate various vehicle functions.

The US authorities warned about impairments of the reversing camera or the driver assistance program.

How many cars in Germany could be affected initially remained unclear.
