Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, numerous farms have given up in recent years.

Your areas were taken over by other companies.

The number of agricultural businesses fell from 2016 to 2020 by two percent to 4800, as the State Statistical Office announced on Monday in Schwerin.

The agriculturally used area remained largely the same at minus 0.1 percent.

The average size of the farms was therefore 282 hectares in 2020.

That is the top position in Germany.

According to the office, the number of animals in MV has decreased by 7.7 percent since 2016.

The largest part of this is due to the decline in cattle farming, it said.

Whereas in 2016 2024 farms kept a good 547,000 cattle, in 2020 the figure was only around 1900 farms with 485,000 animals.

One reason are the milk prices, which farmers criticize as being too low.
