Aleksandar Vucic said that he didn't just drive to the airport to receive the high-quality vaccine.

But also to demonstrate the friendship between Serbia and China.

The Chinese party newspaper "People's Daily" reported last weekend.

Belgrade started using the Chinese vaccine at the beginning of this week.

According to its own statements, this makes Serbia the first European country to rely on the vaccine from China.

As Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said, Belgrade wants to purchase six million more cans from China.

With around seven million inhabitants, Serbia is the largest country in the Western Balkans.

It has been a candidate for EU membership since 2012.

Brussels has a geostrategic interest in binding Belgrade to itself.

The Western Balkans is the south-eastern flank of Europe - the EU traditionally struggles there with countries like Turkey and Saudi Arabia for influence.

But the accession negotiations stall.

No other player uses this vacuum as skillfully as China.
