Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is to become climate neutral by 2050, according to the Left.

To achieve this goal, the opposition party will present a draft climate protection law to the state parliament in the new week.

It aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the northeast by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and by 85 percent by 2040.

The state government should therefore set a special example and organize its direct administration in a climate-neutral manner by 2030.

According to its own assessment, the country has missed the self-imposed climate target by 2020, a reduction in CO2 emissions by 40 percent.

"As in all of Germany - it will be difficult to achieve the goals set for 2020," admitted Energy Minister Christian Ebene (SPD) in November.

In 2017, carbon dioxide emissions were 73.3 percent of the 1990 value. The value has not decreased significantly since 2010.

At that time, according to government figures, it was 73.9 percent.

The left's energy policy spokeswoman, Mignon Schwenke, declared the state government's climate policy to have failed.

"It's shocking that MV has made next to no progress in the past ten years," she said.

The set climate protection targets would be missed.

"This proves that a non-binding action plan without specific reduction targets and binding measures as well as regular monitoring will not lead to success."

According to the draft law, the government should work with representatives from science, trade unions, business, clubs and associations as well as citizens to develop an energy and climate concept that defines the individual steps towards climate neutrality.

It must also be ensured that the energy transition is socially just, it says.

According to the Left, the concept should be available by 2022 and then updated every five years.

The municipalities and districts are to create climate protection strategies and heating concepts.

For each residential area it should be analyzed which thermal energy is used and to what extent.

In addition, in their draft law, the left are calling for significantly more reforestation and organic farming in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to improve the climate.

By 2030, the proportion of the forested land area is to increase from 23 to 30 percent.

To do this, the forest area has to grow by 1000 hectares annually.

According to the ideas, organic farming will then make up 25 percent of all agriculture.
