Les Sables-d'Olonne / France (dpa / lno) - Boris Herrmann achieved an exceptional performance even before reaching the finish line at his Vendée Globe premiere.

The 39-year-old from Hamburg crossed his own course line from the start of the race on the 77th day of his solo circumnavigation.

Herrmann has thus circled the world as only the third German sailor after Wilfried Erdmann (1984/85 and 2000/2001) and Susanne Huber-Curphey (2018/2019) and as the first regatta participant alone and non-stop.

In the race itself, the skipper of the “Seaexplorer - Yacht Club de Monaco” was in third place on Sunday afternoon after a good and fast night.

Herrmann was around 45 nautical miles behind the new leader Louis Burton (“Bureau Vallée 2”).

Second placed Charlie Dalin was 40 nautical miles short.

About four days before the eagerly awaited final on January 27th or 28th, Herrmann even kept his chances of victory, as he is the only one in the top trio to receive a six-hour time credit, which he can deduct from his total sailing time at the finish.

«I had a good night, slept and continued to concentrate on my race.

I am the hunter, the others the hunted.

They have pressure and I continue to be in a good position, ”said Herrmann of the German Press Agency.

The restitution was promised by the race committee after his participation in the rescue mission for Kevin Escoffier on the night of November 30th to December 1st, whose yacht first broke through in the South Atlantic storm and then sank.

Behind Herrmann, the French Yannick Bestaven (10:15 hours time credit) and Jean Le Cam (4:15 pm) are two other skippers with time credits fighting for a podium place.

However, both were not within striking distance of the Germans on Sunday afternoon, 190 and 550 nautical miles behind, despite their credit.
