According to Skistar, which owns and operates several Swedish ski resorts, the booking situation for this year's sports holiday is quite similar to what the situation looked like before last season.

Ordinary years, many Danes travel to the Swedish mountains, but the closed border means that this year the company almost exclusively counts on Swedish visitors.

- We have received some cancellations from Danish guests.

At the same time, Swedes do not travel abroad to the same extent now, which means that the places at our facilities are filled up fairly quickly by Swedish tourists, says Skistar's CEO Stefan Sjöstrand.

The demand for ether varies with car rental companies

According to him, bookings for this year's season started earlier than usual, but lost momentum somewhat as the infection situation deteriorated during the autumn.

SJ states that at this time this year, there are significantly fewer train journeys booked for the sports holiday weeks if you compare with what the situation looked like in 2019, which was a "normal year".

According to press spokesperson Stephan Ray, however, the trend throughout the pandemic has been that travelers book tickets close to departure.

The car rental company Hertz, on the other hand, is seeing an increased booking pressure this year, in Stockholm the demand for cars during the sports holiday week has increased by 20 percent.

In the rest of the country, supply is good, says the company's marketing manager Cecilia Saberi.

With the company Avis, on the other hand, bookings are now fewer than in both 2019 and 2020. The company's Sweden manager Andrew Smith states, however, that customers now book a car more often before the trip.

Healthcare concerned

Although the mountain trips during Christmas and New Year have so far not shown an increased spread of covid-19, healthcare in the mountain regions is concerned about what a new influx of tourists could mean.

The chairman of the care association in Dalarna, Marion Vaeggemose, believes that the situation is still worrying.

Just because you can travel, does not mean you should do it, she says.

- If you can not see that the spread of infection has decreased, we do not think you should take the risk and go up to the mountains and meet a lot of other people, says Marion Vaeggemose.
