Leipzig (dpa / sn) - Free WiFi is in short supply at Saxony's train stations.

As the Saxon left-wing member of the Bundestag Caren Lay announced, only 10 of 501 train stations in the Free State are equipped with free access.

This emerges from a response by the federal government to a request from Lay.

Five of the stations with WiFi access are therefore in Leipzig, two in Dresden and one each in Chemnitz, Riesa and Pirna.

The railway was completely oversleeping digitization, commented Lay on these figures.

If the traffic turnaround is to succeed, traveling by train has to be attractive.

This also includes free WiFi at all train stations.

The distribution of previous additions is also exemplary.

They concentrated on Leipzig and a few other cities.

"The rural area is not given any attention here either - a bitter disappointment," explained Lay.

Deutsche Bahn confirmed that free WiFi access for travelers and visitors is available at ten Saxon train stations operated by DB Stations & Service AG.

These are heavily used stations and classic transfer stations.

The fact that the WLAN connection is very different in the federal states is due to the contracts with the transport associations that commission such services.

In Hesse, for example, all S-Bahn stations of the RMV network are equipped with WiFi, the railway said.

WLAN availability should also be expanded in Saxony.

To this end, there should be more cooperation with partners, said the railway.

Details are being worked out.

Nationwide, rail customers could use WLAN free of charge at around 600 traffic stations.
