Flensburg (dpa) - Circle runner Jacob Heinl from the handball Bundesliga club SG Flensburg-Handewitt has successfully operated on his right knee.

As the North Germans announced on Sunday, a meniscus and cartilage damage were repaired during the operation in Berlin.

Heinl is out for at least six months and is no longer available to head coach Maik Machulla this season.

The 34-year-old will carry out his rehabilitation phase in Flensburg.

“This season we are once again asked as a team to find creative solutions for this failure in the inner block and to compensate for them.

It won't be an easy task, ”said Machulla.

Managing Director Dierk Schmäschke also regrets the renewed Heinl failure: "Jacob is incredibly important for the team, that he is now absent for so long is a major setback for everyone."

The injury results from the consequences of a torn inner ligament that Heinl had suffered in the preparation for the season.

Although the inner ligament had healed well, the veteran continued to complain of discomfort in the affected knee.

This now made the renewed intervention necessary.
