Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - For the first time in North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the police's new electro-shock weapons, a so-called taser, was used on Sunday.

According to the police, a young man in Düsseldorf threatened to take his own life on Saturday evening.

In order to prevent the suicide near the American Consulate General, officials then used the taser, a police spokeswoman said on Sunday.

The man was briefly unable to act due to the electrodes.

He was reportedly unharmed in a psychiatric clinic.

The police in North Rhine-Westphalia are currently testing the use of tasers with 70 devices for a year.

Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) presented the project in Dortmund in mid-January.

The selected locations are Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund and in the Rhein-Erft district.
