Kitzbühel (dpa) - German ski racers Romed Baumann and Andreas Sander missed a sensational podium at the downhill classic in Kitzbühel - but they are getting closer and closer to the coup.

Baumann finished fifth on the Streif on Sunday, followed by Sander.

The best downhill skiers of the German Ski Association (DSV) were around a second slower than winner Beat Feuz.

"The ride was cool again, I really got into it," said Baumann, a veteran from Kiefersfelden, who was "mega happy" at the Hahnenkamm with his best result in a World Cup downhill run for more than five years.

"The placement is definitely good, the podium was a bit too far away again," said Baumann - he was almost six tenths of a second short of third.

As in the downhill run on Friday, the Swiss Feuz, who won ahead of the French Johan Clarey (+0.17) and Matthias Mayer from Austria (+0.38), couldn't be beaten.

The DSV-Asse celebrated the first descent with two top 6 places in three years - Thomas Dreßen won in Kitzbühel in 2018, Sander finished sixth.

This time the native Westphalian had seen the chance of his first podium result in the World Cup.

"There was really a lot in there," he said afterwards, attributing his deficit to the lack of looseness.

"Maybe I wanted too much violence."

Unlike on Friday, there were no serious falls, also because the dangerous target jump was clearly defused.

The fact that there was fog over the runway at times was “not a problem at all,” said Sander.

In addition to the two top 6 drivers, Dominik Schwaiger from the DSV team came in 17th in the points.

Josef Ferstl (32nd), Simon Jocher (36th) and Manuel Schmid (37th) missed the top 30. On Monday (10.45 am) there is still a Super-G in Kitzbühel.
