An avalanche killed a cross-country skier on Sunday in Savoie.

The man, a 31-year-old ski instructor, was moving around Arc 2000 at the end of the morning when he was buried under three meters of snow.

According to a count, he is the sixth person to have lost his life in an avalanche in France this week.

A cross-country skier died Sunday after being swept away by an avalanche in Savoie, mountain rescue services said.

The avalanche took place around 11:30 am in Arc 2000 and the 30-something, who was ski touring with friends, was buried under three meters of snow, said a rescuer from the CRS (Republican security company) from Modane.

Transported in cardio-respiratory arrest in Annecy, the man, a 31-year-old ski instructor, died of his injuries.

The Modane CRS was supported by a helicopter made available by the Annecy CRS.

"Lots of visitors to the ski area but it is not secured by the ski patrollers"

"The man was trapped by the snowpack: there has been snowfall in Savoie in recent days and a lot of wind, which has favored the transport and accumulation of snow" in places, said the rescuer .

The skiers "have the impression of being safe and there is a lot of traffic in the ski area. But it is not secured by the trackers and by the passage of other skiers like other years", due to the ban on ski lifts, he added.

At least six people have died from avalanches in France this week, according to an AFP count.
