At least 19 charred bodies were discovered Saturday in Miguel Aleman, a Mexican town near the border with the United States, announced the public prosecutor's office of the State of Tamaulipas (north).

The police discovered on a country road "two charred vehicles, as well as human remains", specifies the prosecution in a statement.

Two charred corpses were in the front seats of one of the vehicles - a van - two more outside and 15 in the back.

According to the first elements of the investigation, "the death was caused by projectiles from a firearm, then they were set on fire."

No cartridge case having been found on the spot, the prosecution does not exclude that the victims could have been killed in another place.

Located on the borders of the State of Nuevo Leon, Miguel Aleman, a city of 20,000 inhabitants, adjoins the American city of Roma (Texas).

The region is regularly the scene of clashes between the North West cartel, which controls part of Nuevo León, and the Gulf cartel, which has been raging in Tamaulipas for decades.

In January 2019, 24 corpses, including 15 charred, were found in Miguel Aleman, after clashes between criminal groups.

Since December 2006, more than 300,000 violent deaths have been recorded in Mexico.

This violence is often linked to organized crime, especially drug cartels fighting over routes to the United States.
