During a year, an average of six hurricanes form across the Atlantic.

In 2020, there were 13, according to figures from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which SVT's meteorologists have compiled in a weather year chronicle.

- It was as if there was always a new hurricane that you had to talk about, says SVT's meteorologist Tora Tomasdottir.

The names ended

Last year's hurricane season was so active that the list of predetermined storm names that the meteorological world organization, WMO, produces every year, ended.

- Instead, they start using the Greek alphabet, so we had storms called Alpha, Beta and Gamma and so on.

It made it clear that it was an unusual year, says SVT's meteorologist Tora Tomasdottir.

Creates art of extreme weather

According to the Science World's film "H20 - The battle for water", extreme amounts of rain and floods today are four times more likely than 40 years ago.

In the program, we meet two photographers who have made it their artistic niche to document natural phenomena and the devastation they leave behind.

- There is something about flooded areas that makes them visually attractive, says photographer Gideon Mendel who has visited 20 floods in 13 different countries.
