January 23, 2021 Twenty years after an accident that cost him the amputation of both limbs, an Icelandic is the first man in the world to receive a double shoulder and arm transplant.

Operated in Lyon earlier this month, the patient is recovering well, doctors said at a press conference. No complications, although there are still no certainties on how much he will be able to move his new arms in the future.

But "giving a little to someone who was missing so much is already a lot," said Aram Gazarian, the chief surgeon of the operation, quoted by the Guardian. Four surgical teams were involved to minimize the transition time between donor and recipient.
