The FIT Federal Council has appointed Filippo Volandri as the new captain of the Davis Cup team.

Volandri, who has also held the position of National Technical Director since 2018, takes over from Corrado Barazzutti, whose mandate expired on December 31st.

Barazzutti was Davis Cup captain continuously for 20 years and also held the role of Fed Cup captain from 2002 to 2016, leading the women's national team to conquer 4 world titles.

"Italian tennis will always be grateful to Corrado Barazzutti for the extraordinary contribution he made to our movement first as a player and then as a coach - said FIT president Angelo Binaghi - Just as we did thanks to him in 2001, turning the page to proceed with the total. managerial, technical and ethical renewal of the Federation, we felt that the recent phase of exceptional development of our men's Technical Sector was the most suitable to proceed with a new change in the future ".

"To Corrado - continued Binaghi - goes our most sincere 'thank you' for the results he has achieved and for the example he has been able to give to Italian players for two decades. Filippo Volandri wishes to continue on the the blue bench the excellent work he has been doing for some years, together with all the federal technical staff, to encourage and coordinate the growth of new Italian talents ".

"I thank the Federal Council for the trust placed in me - said the new captain Filippo Volandri - In this very important moment in my career as a coach, an equally heartfelt thanks goes to Corrado, who in 2001, just named captain, made me debut in Davis Cup even though I was still a boy. I hope to be able to honor this role as much as he does.

The Federal Council also expressed the hope that Barazzutti will continue his collaboration with the FIT with a different role.
