Self-destruction of the Southwest CDU: Laschet could use nothing less

Now Laschet needs the 48 percent who voted for Friedrich Merz in the runoff election for the CDU party chairmanship.

Their stronghold is in Baden-Württemberg.

Laschet traveled to Stuttgart especially to give a speech at the state party convention of the CDU.

Ironically, the Merz fan club in the southwest has to pass the first test of Laschet's party leadership in the state elections on March 14th.

The objection by Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder showed how unpromising many in the Union see this.
