Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt spent more money on art purchases in 2020 than in the previous year.

Works were bought for a total of around 207,000 euros, in 2019 it was just under 114,300, according to a response from the state government to a small request from SPD state parliament member Angela Kolb-Janssen.

There were no art purchases with special reference to the support of artists during the corona pandemic.

However, the focus of the purchase was on contemporary fine art.

The artists from whom works were purchased and for what price were classified as classified.

"The purchase is intended to support the development of a creative, multi-layered, lively and expressive visual arts scene in Saxony-Anhalt," said the state government's answer.

First and foremost, decisions are made based on content and artistic criteria.

An art advisory board advises the country.

The aim is to document the potential and artistic development in a representative collection in a state collection.

In addition, existing art collections are to be completed.

The works of art purchased by the state are documented and stored in the state administration office.

Many are on loan to public institutions and bodies.
