Mainz (dpa) - The CDU federal chairman Armin Laschet described the postal voting results after the CDU's digital party congress as “great support”.

The approval of 83 percent was "very remarkable," said the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister on Saturday at a program party conference of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU.

The postal voting results show that delegates made new decisions and “jumped trenches”.

Laschet had narrowly won the race for the CDU top office at the digital party congress against ex-Union faction leader Friedrich Merz.

"We had three candidates, they were great candidates," said Laschet, paused and added with a laugh: "I myself think I'm pretty good too."

With a view to the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate on March 14th, Laschet recalled the Rhine Province, which existed as a Prussian province from 1822 until the dissolution of Prussia after the Second World War.

At that time, the Rhine Province comprised areas of what is now North Rhine-Westphalia and what is now Rhineland-Palatinate, and now there is a chance of a CDU government in both countries.

"If we both rule together again, we can achieve a great deal."
