Halle (dpa) - The handball players of the SV Union Halle-Neustadt have caused a surprise.

The promoted team defeated TSV Bayer Leverkusen in seventh place on Saturday at home with 25:22 (10:12) and thus stopped the sporty downward trend.

The protégés of coach Jan-Henning Himborn celebrated their last victory on October 31, 2020 at 8:18 pm at Buchholz-Rosengarten.

Goalkeeper Anica Gudelj (14 saves), Helena Mikkelsen (7/1) and Sophie Lütke (5) had the largest share in the first success after seven games without a win.

Svenja Huber (5) scored the most goals for Leverkusen.

First, the guests determined the game and after ten minutes led 6: 3.

But the Halle women were not impressed, managed to equalize 7: 7 (19th) and turned the game around after the break thanks to an outstanding defensive performance.

By the 51st minute, the SV Union only allowed three goals against and hurried to 21:15.

Despite an offensive cover, Leverkusen could no longer catch up.
